How does Proxmox backup encryption work?

Proxmox Backup Server supports client-side encryption, and the keys stay with you, so Computer Port never holds your data in plaintext. Traffic is protected with TLS in transit. Note that PBS itself has no WORM or immutability flag: ransomware resistance comes from its content-addressed chunk store, which a normal backup run cannot overwrite, from ZFS snapshots on the datastore, from backup tokens issued without prune or delete rights, and optionally from S3 Object Lock on a synced bucket.

How do you prove backups actually work?

Every backup job is followed by an automated PBS verify job, which re-reads the chunks rather than trusting that the write succeeded. Failed jobs raise an alert. On managed plans we also run a live restore of a nominated VM each quarter and issue a one-page report with a boot screenshot and timestamp, because a backup nobody has restored is an assumption rather than a backup.
